The Benefits of Delegation in Business

As business owners we often think if something needs to be done right, it needs to be done by us. But there comes a time when your self-imposed workload becomes so overwhelming that you need to decide:

”Am I going to do a few, but more important, things really well, or absolutely everything, but with mediocre or poor results?”

Trying to take on every task won’t make you stronger or a more inspirational leader, but it will likely cause burn out, irritability, foolish mistakes, and money loss. The solution here, though seemingly obvious, is one of the most ignored tactics among small business owners: delegation.

Don’t ever underestimate the difference that successful delegation can make! This could mean assigning some of your mounting responsibilities to employees (with proper guidance and compensation of course) , which will allow you to focus on the bigger picture, or it could just mean allowing your employees to actually do the jobs that they were hired for without micromanaging or having you constantly step in. That said,  taking a more hands-off approach shouldn’t mean lowering your standards. If you have high expectations, and back them up with a solid foundation of training and clear communication, people will more often than not rise to meet them. However, the reverse is also true. If you think very little of your employees and waste your time micromanaging them, then even the most competent people will eventually become apathetic and do only the bare minimum to get through the day. The less you allow people to do what they were hired to do, the less likely they are to actually try to do it.

The next step in delegation is to also be on the lookout for those with “hidden” talents who could be an asset to your company. Are there people in your business whose natural abilities, personality, or education could provide value to you if properly encouraged? Never forget that part of your responsibility as a leader is to bring out the best in your employees while creating an environment where they want to stay and thrive.

And beyond just lightening your load…

…you might be amazed at the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel when you step into more of a coaching or mentorship role.

Guiding your employees and seeing them develop skills and confidence is not only motivational, it’s simply good for business.
